About Me
I have 25 years of experience managing money for investors. I graduated from McMaster University with a degree in
Psychology. I worked as a claim adjuster for six years before I started at Co-operators Investment Counsel. I passed
the Canadian Securities Course before moving on to the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) designation. There are a lot
of letters behind some professionals name but believe me the CFA are the ones that count. I am licensed by the Ontario
Securities Commission as a Portfolio Manager. Please check me out on the OSC web site under the
firm name of Wickham Investment Counsel.
I have invested for large corporations like Zurich Insurance and mutual funds like the University Avenue Canadian Fund or
the Atlas Large Cap Value Fund. I have managed money for friends, family and foundations like the Juravinski Cancer
Centre Foundation. I have had experience in a variety of styles from top down, bottom up, sector rotation and value
focus for example.
Over the years I have developed expertise in a number of areas like common shares, convertible debenture, preferred
shares, Income Trusts and the oil and gas area. I was widely quoted in various financial journals like the Wall Street
Round Table Transcript and the Globe and Mail.
Understanding investors needs and risk tolerances and meeting them is key to having happy satisfied clients. I take time
to work with my clients and limit myself to a set number of relationships. A manager can only handle a certain number of
clients effectively before they lose focus on either clients or the markets.
I believe that cash flow is one of the better ways of judging the financial health of a company. Cash flow and
especially free cash flow is the cornerstone to some of the valuation techniques I use. Cash flow is less likely to be
affected by some of the decisions that management might make that would affect earnings.
